The antenna is the easy part. The cable is what costs you an afternoon.
A standard VHF coax terminates in a PL-259 — a chunky threaded plug roughly the diameter of your little finger. It will not pass through most deck glands, mast conduits, hardtop tubing or the cable runs already threaded through your boat. So you have two choices: route the bare cable first and fit the connector afterwards, or cut the connector off an existing cable and re-terminate it once it is through.
Either way you end up soldering a coaxial connector, often in an awkward position, on a boat that may not be sitting still. It is the step most likely to go wrong, and when it goes wrong it does not fail cleanly — a cold joint or a strand of braid bridging the centre conductor raises SWR, quietly costs you range, and lets moisture wick into the cable where it corrodes from the inside out.
Scout supplies the cable with a miniature FME connector already fitted at the factory. FME was designed to be slim — the connector is barely wider than the coax itself.
The join is a sealed coaxial junction made under factory conditions rather than one you make by hand at the top of a mast — which is the entire point.

With a conventional antenna, usually yes. The coax has to be routed before the bulky PL-259 plug can be fitted, which means either soldering the connector on after the run or cutting and re-terminating an existing cable. Both are fiddly jobs, and a cold or bridged solder joint is a common cause of high SWR and poor range. QuickFit removes that step entirely.
A properly made FME connection is a sealed coaxial junction, not a compromise. The failure mode it prevents is more common than the one it introduces: a badly soldered PL-259 fitted at the top of a mast in poor conditions degrades SWR and lets moisture into the braid, which is exactly what corrodes a cable run from the inside.
Yes, and this is where it helps most. Because the FME end is small enough to pass through conduit and deck fittings that a PL-259 will not clear, you can route the new cable through the existing path rather than opening it up.
