VHF Antenna Troubleshooting

Last updated: March 2026

Common problems and how to fix them.

Weak or Scratchy Reception

If your VHF radio has weak or distorted reception, check these items in order:

  1. Check the PL-259 center pin for contact with the outer barrel (short circuit)
  2. Verify all connections are clean and tight at both radio and antenna
  3. Inspect the cable for kinks, cuts, or crush points
  4. Check for corrosion on connectors — salt air degrades connections
  5. Ensure antenna is mounted above any metal obstructions

No Transmission or Reception

If your radio shows no signal at all:

  1. Confirm radio is on Channel 16 and not in weather or scan mode
  2. Verify antenna cable is securely connected at both ends
  3. Check that radio's antenna port hasn't been switched to AIS or secondary
  4. Inspect the antenna for visible damage or cracks

Intermittent Performance

If your radio works sometimes but not others, it's usually a loose connection:

  • • Tighten all connector connections
  • • Check for cable chafing where it passes through hardtops or bulkheads
  • • Inspect cable routing for loose sections that move with vibration
  • • Engine vibration and offshore pounding can cause marginal connections to fail

High SWR Reading

If your SWR meter shows above 2.0:1:

  • • Inspect all connections for corrosion or damage
  • • Check cable for water intrusion or degradation
  • • Verify the antenna mount isn't corroded
  • • Make sure the antenna isn't near metal obstructions

SWR Reference

1.0-1.5:1 = Excellent | 1.5-2.0:1 = Acceptable | 2.0-3.0:1 = Marginal | Above 3.0:1 = Problem

Water Intrusion — The #1 Killer

Water inside your antenna is the most common cause of failure. It corrodes internal elements, degrades performance, and often isn't visible from the outside.

Prevention: Scout's foam-filled construction seals out moisture at the manufacturing level. If you have a hollow antenna, inspect it regularly and consider upgrading to a foam-filled model.
