Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about marine VHF antennas, installation, range, and performance.

Scout antennas are 100% foam filled using a closed-cell foam system that provides multiple benefits. First, it creates a complete water seal that protects the internal radiator elements from moisture intrusion, preventing corrosion and extending antenna life. Second, the foam securely locks the antenna element in place, eliminating any rattling or vibration when your boat is underway at speed. Third, it adds structural strength and durability to withstand harsh marine conditions including high winds and rough seas. This foam-filled construction is a hallmark of premium marine antennas, we just happen to do it across our entire range - giving you extreme value and performance.
An 8-foot marine VHF antenna with 6dB gain typically provides a communication range of 25-30 miles under ideal conditions. Actual range depends on antenna gain, mounting height, vessel size, and surrounding terrain.
A 3dB gain antenna approximately doubles the effective radiated power compared to a dipole, while a 6dB gain antenna provides approximately 4 times the effective power. Higher gain means longer range but requires higher mounting for optimal performance.
