Sun makes them brittle, the first hard slam in a chop finds the weak section, and the threads or ratchet teeth give up long before the antenna does. The failure is rarely dramatic — it is a wobble that becomes a lean that becomes a snapped base at 30 knots.
Engineering-grade injection-molded nylon is a different material class: glass-reinforced for stiffness, UV-stabilized for a decade in the sun, molded as one continuous part with no castings to crack or welds to corrode, and kind to the stainless threads that seat into it.
