Garmin sells radios; the antenna is a separate purchase from an antenna maker. That is good news — it means you can pair a Garmin radio (VHF 115, VHF 215, VHF 315) with the best antenna for your boat rather than a bundled compromise.
Gain comes from the antenna, not the radio. The honest rule: 3 dB (usually 4–5 ft) for small boats, sailboats and anything that rolls — it holds the horizon as the boat moves; 6 dB (usually 8 ft) for stable powerboats that want maximum range. Radio brand plays no part in that choice.
