VHF Antennas for Center Consoles

Everything you need to know about choosing and installing a VHF antenna on your center console.

Why Center Consoles Are Different

Center consoles are the most popular boat type in the US, and they present unique VHF antenna considerations. With typically open decks, minimal cabin structure, and T-top or tower mounting, center consoles offer excellent antenna mounting positions — but there are still choices to make.

Mounting Options

  • T-Top Mount — The most common setup. Provides 12-14 feet of antenna height above waterline. Ideal for 8-foot antennas.
  • Hardtop Mount — Similar height to T-top, often 12-16 feet. Good option on express boats and walkarounds.
  • Radar Arch Mount — Lower mounting position (~10 feet), but keeps antenna clear of T-top structure.
  • Leaning Post Mount — Lower height, typically 8-10 feet. Consider a 4-foot antenna for this position.
  • Tower Mount — Highest position available (25-35 feet). A 4-foot antenna here outperforms 8-foot on a T-top.
