An 8-foot 6dB antenna is the most popular size in recreational boating because it delivers the best combination of gain, physical size, and compatibility with common mounting locations.
Boat-to-Boat Communication Range
When two recreational vessels are talking to each other, the range depends on both antenna heights:

What This Means for Different Boaters
